Immersion in the magical world of networking - NAT concept explained

NAT concept explained

What does NAT stands for ?

NAT = Network Address Translation

Let’s keep in mind for now only the term Translation

If two persons that live in two different countries would try to communicate with each other using their native language that may differ then for sure the communication would not be possible .

How would that communication work ? – by using a Translator , you know a small machine that translate words from a language to another language.

But in order to use a translator you need to have Access to that tool , let’s emphasize now also on Access term as well because if someone restricts Access to translator for any of these persons the communication would not work.

Same thing happens with IPs , if some IPs cannot communicate outside their local network then in order to facilitate this communication a NAT IP is required to enable that, but in order to be able to use that NAT IP those IPs need to be allowed to and that’s why behind every NAT IP there is an Access list that permits or restricts communication using the NAT IP for certain IPs .

Every time when a translated IP is communicating with an outside IP some logs are being generated during NAT translation.

So in case if something went wrong and the communication does not work there are two things that have to be checked :

1.The Access list that relates to that NAT IP in order to check if translated IPs are allowed for communication or not

2.The NAT translation logs related to that specific NAT IP

I hope this have been informative for you and I am more than happy to provide even more info if required
